Tuberville-Jones Governor's Race Without a Debate as Jones' Months of Challenges Go Unanswered

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · States · GSM News

Alabama's 2026 race for governor is heading toward Election Day without a head-to-head debate between the major candidates. The Alabama Reflector reported on Oct. 12 that Democratic nominee Doug Jones, a former U.S. senator, has spent months challenging Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville, the state's incumbent U.S. senator, to meet him in a public debate. Jones' campaign says it has accepted invitations from organizations interested in hosting debates, while Tuberville has declined to participate.

In September, Jones used an online broadcast to play recordings of Tuberville's past remarks on Social Security, tariffs and public safety and respond to them point by point, arguing that voters deserve a direct exchange of competing positions rather than a campaign defined by statements and attack ads.

The winner will lead Alabama's state government, shaping budget priorities, economic development and public policy for years to come. The general election is Nov. 3. As of Oct. 12, the Tuberville campaign had announced no debate plans, and the absence of a direct encounter has become one of the most prominent issues in the race.
