University of Alabama Condemns 'Unacceptable' Fan Behavior After Objects Thrown at Georgia Players

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — No. 2 Georgia held off No. 6 Alabama 20-17 on Saturday night, Oct. 10, but the game ended in ugly scenes as some Alabama fans threw bottles, cans and other debris at Georgia players heading toward the tunnel, forcing team staff to have players put their helmets back on as they left the field.
The University of Alabama athletics department issued a statement on Oct. 12 strongly condemning the behavior. “We are disappointed by the unacceptable behavior exhibited by some of the game's attendees last night and are in the process of gathering information,” the statement read. “Alabama takes matters of fan conduct seriously and expects everyone at our events to demonstrate respect to the student-athletes, coaches, staff, officials and visitors. Such conduct will not be tolerated.”
The finish had featured a controversial no-call on a possible defensive holding penalty with 3:28 remaining, after which an Alabama personal foul wiped out the Tide's final comeback chance. The university said officiating disputes could not justify attacks on visiting players, and that its review of the incident is continuing.
