First Atlanta Climate Week Under Way: Innovation Summit Opens, Resilience Plan to Debut

Atlanta is a city in Fulton County, Georgia. The first-ever Atlanta Climate Week runs Oct. 10-15, and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Resilience's program hits its peak this week. On Oct. 12, the week's Innovation Summit took the stage at SCADshow, 1470 Spring Street NW, with six panels from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. covering clean-energy technology, green buildings and climate finance, drawing business, academic and community representatives.
The week closes Oct. 15 with a roadshow for the city's first Climate Resilience Action Plan, hosted by the mayor's office, which will tour neighborhoods to present the plan and gather resident input. Atlanta's citywide goals include 100% clean energy by 2035 and cutting greenhouse-gas emissions 59% below 2019 levels by 2030.
City data released in August showed emissions down 21% from 2019 — short of the 25% interim target set for 2025. Officials acknowledge the 2030 goal will be hard to reach at the current pace and hope Climate Week will lock in new commitments from businesses and communities.
Organizers say the week features dozens of events, including tree plantings, neighborhood cleanups and youth climate education, with free registration through the city website.
The mayor's office said most Climate Week events are free and open to the public, and that the city hopes to translate its emissions targets into concrete neighborhood-level action. The city also said it will continue publishing emissions data and progress toward its targets regularly, and will report on implementation of the resilience plan in its annual reporting.
