Boston Scientific Names Fitzgerald COO, to Split Into Three Segments Next Year

Boston is a city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Boston Scientific, the medical device giant headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts, announced on October 12 that Joseph M. Fitzgerald has been named executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective January 1, 2027. He will oversee the company's global operations, business units and regions. At the same time, the company said it will reorganize into three new reporting segments starting January 1, 2027: Interventional Therapies, Rhythm Solutions and MedSurg. The company said the structure is designed to speed decision-making and optimize investment allocation. Fitzgerald currently serves as group president of the company's cardiovascular business; after his promotion, the heads of the three segments will report directly to him.
According to the company's earnings call, Boston Scientific posted second-quarter 2026 revenue of $5.44 billion, up 7.5% year over year, with adjusted earnings per share of $0.86, up 15%. Management guided third-quarter organic revenue growth of 3% to 5%. In January, the company also announced an agreement to acquire Penumbra; once completed, that business will be folded into the Interventional Therapies segment. The combined leadership and structural overhaul is seen as a signal that the company is accelerating its expansion in the medical device arena.
