Newport Beach Piers and the Wedge Reopen Monday Afternoon After Coastal Closures; Balboa Lot Reopening in Sections

Newport Beach is a city in Orange County, California. The City of Newport Beach's city news list shows that Newport Pier and Balboa Pier have reopened to the public following coastal closures over the weekend.
According to an October 12, 2026 City News Service report published by MyNewsLA, both piers and the Wedge, the well-known surf break stretching from the rock jetty to M Street, reopened on Monday afternoon, October 12. The Balboa Pier parking lot was reopening in sections as cleanup work continued, and the protective sand berms remained in place.
Elevated surf and unusually high ocean water levels associated with Tropical Storm Rachel began flooding streets on the Balboa Peninsula on Thursday night. The city declared a local emergency, and all city beaches, both piers and the Wedge were closed over the weekend. The National Weather Service said the peak of the coastal flooding threat passed on Sunday, and the coastal flood warning was downgraded to an advisory on Sunday afternoon, in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Newport Beach Lifeguard Captain Andy White said in the report that the protective sand berms remain in place in the reopened areas and that beachgoers would be asked to stay off the berms, with surf forecast for the coming days and lifeguards on duty at the beach.
