Pasadena Launches Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month With ABC Guidance and Free Training

Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The Pasadena Public Health Department has designated October as Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month, drawing attention to safe sleep practices for parents and caregivers. The city says sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the leading cause of death for babies aged 1 to 12 months in the United States; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data show about 3,400 sleep-related infant deaths nationwide in 2024, and Pasadena has recorded eight such deaths over the past decade.
The city promotes the “ABCs” of safe sleep: A for Alone — babies should sleep in their own sleep space, not in bed with adults or other children; B for Back — babies should be placed on their backs for every sleep; and C for Crib — use a safety-approved crib, bassinet or play yard with a firm, flat surface and a fitted sheet only, with no pillows, blankets, stuffed toys or bumper pads.
Pasadena is partnering with Cribs for Kids and the Pasadena Child Health Foundation to provide portable cribs to families in need, and offers a virtual “Safe Sleep 101” class. The roughly 45-minute online class teaches how to set up a safe sleep environment; Pasadena residents who complete the full class receive infant items including a swaddle, a wearable blanket, a onesie and a parenting handbook.
For information and registration, contact the Pasadena Public Health Department's Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health program at 800-304-0015 or [email protected]; the class registration form is at bit.ly/SafeSleepForm. (Based on the City of Pasadena announcement)
