Red Wings Lean on 'Group Leadership' After Tumultuous Offseason, Host Devils Tonight

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan confirmed the team held a leadership meeting before Monday's practice, and plans to hold one every seven to 10 days. The participants included Ben Chiarot, Alex DeBrincat, Justin Faulk, Keegan Kolesar and Moritz Seider, with Lucas Raymond absent on a rest day. With no captain at the moment, McLellan said everyone must share the leadership load: 'Leadership comes in multiple forms, and everyone can take a piece of it.' The Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils tonight at Little Caesars Arena (6 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Detroit endured a turbulent offseason: Dylan Larkin requested a trade and was stripped of the captaincy; general manager Steve Yzerman moved into a senior advisor role, with assistant GM Shawn Horcoff taking over as interim general manager; and unsigned restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson returned to Sweden. According to NHL.com, amid a poor start and outside pressure, core players such as DeBrincat hope a tighter team atmosphere will steady the locker room — keeping outside noise to a minimum, enjoying practice every day, and using the 'group leadership' model to turn things around and end the franchise's run of missed playoffs. Tonight's home game will be the first test of the new approach.
