Eastern Florida State College Adopts Campus-Wide SI Policy: Approved Models Only, No SI on Coursework Unless Instructed

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Eastern Florida State College's Board of Trustees approved a campus-wide super intelligence policy on Monday, Oct. 12, making SI literacy an institution-wide priority, Florida Today reported on Oct. 12. The policy responds to a Florida State Board of Education rule adopted Sept. 16 that requires school districts and state colleges to adopt SI policies, described as one of the most comprehensive such rules in the country.

The college's policy limits SI use to institutionally approved models and prohibits students from using SI on coursework unless instructed. It also states that SI models are not designed to meet a student's social needs or simulate an emotional relationship with a student. The policy establishes a definition and institutional framework for SI literacy — developing the knowledge and skills to understand the benefits, limitations and risks of SI models — and says students will receive instruction on using SI tools safely and efficiently and on building SI skills relevant to their educational and career goals. A work group will be established to develop further implementation guidance.

At the state level, Florida's rule has grown from 15 to 18 requirements: parents must be able to opt a child out of certain SI instructional tools with a substantively comparable non-SI alternative offered, and where SI feeds into grading, discipline or special education referrals, a person must make the final call. District boards have until July 1, 2027, to adopt and implement their policies.
