Ryan Coogler's 'X-Files' Reboot Lands Hulu Series Order as Pilot Moves to Full Season

Ryan Coogler's new take on "The X-Files" has scored a series order at Hulu, The Hollywood Reporter reported on October 13, moving the project out of development and into full-season production. Deadline and other trade outlets confirmed the news the same day, and the show's official social media account also announced the pickup.

Coogler wrote and directed the pilot himself. The new series stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated but very different FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena — the same premise that anchored the original show. Chris Carter, who created the original series, is on board as an executive producer in a non-writing role. In a statement, Coogler said he has loved "The X-Files" for a long time and that writing and directing the pilot meant a great deal to him, adding that the new version aims to honor what made the original connect with audiences while finding its own way into that world.

The path here has taken years: Hulu ordered the pilot in February of this year, and the completed pilot has now cleared the way for a full season. The episode count and a premiere date have not yet been announced.

The original "X-Files" premiered on Fox in 1993, starring David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, and became one of the defining science-fiction series of the 1990s; it later returned for two short revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. Coogler is among Hollywood's most acclaimed filmmakers, with credits including Marvel's "Black Panther" films and this year's critical and commercial hit "Sinners."
