[Video] 'Being Heumann' Debuts Full Trailer and Screens at London Film Festival as Oscar Buzz Builds for Ruth Madeley

LONDON, Oct. 12 — Apple Original Films released the full trailer for the drama "Being Heumann" on Monday, the same day the film held its UK premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival. The film is written and directed by Sian Heder, whose "CODA" won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and is adapted from the memoir by disability-rights leader Judy Heumann and Kristen Joiner.
Set in 1977, the film recounts how Heumann led more than 100 disabled people in an occupation of the San Francisco Federal Building that lasted 28 days — the longest occupation of a federal building in U.S. history. The protesters demanded enforcement of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which bars disability discrimination in federal programs but whose implementing regulations had stalled unsigned; inside the building, they built a self-sustaining community, arranging food, medical support and care while refusing to leave until the government acted.
British actor Ruth Madeley, who was born with spina bifida, plays Heumann. Mark Ruffalo plays Joseph Califano Jr., the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare who stood in the protesters' way. The ensemble also includes Dylan O'Brien, Rob Delaney and "CODA" actor Daniel Durant. According to Apple, the film features the largest assortment of disabled actors ever assembled; accessibility extended behind the camera, with accessible trailers fitted with lifts and adapted period wheelchairs built for the production.
The film opened the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It opens in select theaters on November 6 and arrives on Apple TV on November 13. Awards attention is building around Madeley: according to JustJared, she currently ranks seventh for a possible Best Actress nomination in Kalshi's prediction market. Heumann, often called the mother of the disability rights movement, died in 2023.
