COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags at state government buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Wednesday, Oct. 14, to sunset on Thursday, Oct. 15, in honor of firefighter and paramedic Charles "Chuck" Jones, who died in the line of duty last week. His visitation and burial will also take place on those dates, and other groups are encouraged to join in flying flags at half-staff.

Jones, 52, served with the Council Bluffs Fire Department for 19 years. He died on Oct. 8 from a medical emergency he suffered the previous day while responding to a fire. Fire Chief Robert Schoening said Jones dedicated 19 years to protecting and serving the community and that his loss is heartbreaking for the entire department. Mayor Jill Shudak said Jones answered a calling that requires courage, compassion and unwavering commitment to those around him.

"Chuck Jones was a beloved husband, father, son, and a member of the Council Bluffs Fire Department who bravely served his community for nearly two decades," Reynolds said. "The city of Council Bluffs has lost a hero, but the lasting impact of his commitment to protect and serve his neighbors will remain forever." She said she and her husband Kevin are keeping his family and friends in their prayers.
