Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · States · GSM News

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly announced on Oct. 12 that he will retire at the end of the 2026-27 season, closing a 32-year tenure at the school. The 69-year-old Fennelly has gone 656-335 at Iowa State, with 24 NCAA Tournament trips and 26 postseason appearances.

“It has been the greatest honor of my professional life to coach at Iowa State for the past 32 years,” Fennelly said. His 822 career wins rank 15th all-time among NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches. He said announcing now gives the new athletics director clarity to plan the program's future.

Born in Davenport, Fennelly came to Iowa State in 1995 from Toledo (166-53 in seven seasons, three NCAA trips), taking over a program coming off six straight losing seasons. He quickly built a contender: Elite Eight runs in 1999 and 2009, a Big 12 regular-season title in 2000, and conference tournament crowns in 2000, 2001 and 2023.
