Rep. Rogers and Gov. Beshear Announce $22 Million in Federal Funding for Eastern Kentucky

CORBIN, Ky. — U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear jointly announced on Oct. 9, at the annual Shaping Our Appalachia Region (SOAR) summit in Corbin, that $22 million in federal funding will go to Eastern Kentucky for health care, emergency services and infrastructure projects.
The money comes from the Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program, which Rogers created in 2016 to help Appalachian coal country diversify its economy. The two men, from different parties, have a long record of cooperation on regional development: Rogers co-founded the SOAR initiative in 2013 with then-Gov. Steve Beshear.
At the summit, Beshear criticized Trump administration policies, saying tariffs are driving up prices and that Medicaid cuts under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” could cost 250,000 Kentuckians their coverage and close rural hospitals. Rogers responded, “Of course I stand with the president.” The two agreed on directing federal money to local development even as their national-policy differences remained on display.
