Struggling Michigan Sticks With QB Underwood and Play-Caller Beck

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed on Monday that despite a slumping season and falling out of the national Top 25, the Wolverines will not change their starting quarterback or their play-caller. Bryce Underwood remains the starter, and offensive coordinator Jason Beck keeps calling plays.
Michigan is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten, having lost 20-19 at home to Iowa on Sept. 26 and 20-14 at Minnesota on Oct. 3 before its bye week. In the Minnesota loss the offense managed one score and 180 yards with three turnovers, prompting Whittingham to say he faced “tough decisions.” Backup quarterback Tommy Carr reportedly took about half of the first-team reps last week, but the depth chart did not change. “Jason will call plays and Bryce is our guy, and we'll move forward,” Whittingham said Monday.
Underwood has completed 59.3% of his passes for 881 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions in five games, with 212 rushing yards and two scores. Michigan ranks 17th of 18 Big Ten teams in both scoring (23.0 points per game) and total offense (315.8 yards per game). Whittingham said the team's biggest problem is the turnover margin: “We continue to lose the turnover margin, we'll continue to lose.” Michigan hosts Penn State (3-3) on Saturday.
