Broward Mayor Turned Away at Sheriff's Headquarters as $900 Million Budget Oversight Fight Escalates

Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. A budget-oversight fight in Miami-metro Broward County escalated this week. According to Miami Focal (Oct. 12-13), Mayor Mark Bogen and several county commissioners went to the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) headquarters and training center on Oct. 12 and demanded access to a fourth-floor area the county says houses a gym and spa facilities, including a sauna and cold plunge — and were turned away.
Bogen said the county commission has approved a core budget of nearly $900 million for the sheriff's office and, as the funding body, has a right to know how the money is used. If the sheriff's office continues to refuse cooperation, he said, the commission may vote on Tuesday (Oct. 13) on whether to go to court to compel disclosure. Several commissioners backed the mayor's position, calling budget oversight a statutory duty of the commission.
Sheriff Gregory Tony responded that the county should obtain information through normal channels such as public-records requests rather than pressure tactics like an unannounced visit, and said he would not be 'bullied.' The two sides have also traded public accusations over the sheriff's budget execution and facility spending.
The dispute reflects a long-standing tension in Florida county government: sheriffs are independently elected by voters yet funded largely by county commissions. Tuesday's commission vote will decide whether the fight moves into a courtroom.
