University of Missouri Opens Four Agriculture Research Facilities Backed by $45 Million State Investment

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri's College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources cut the ribbons on four new research facilities on Oct. 9: Missouri Foundation Seed, the National Center for Applied Reproduction and Genomics, the Grape and Wine Institute Fermentation Lab, and the Michael L. Parson Meat Science Education and Training Laboratory. Missouri Department of Agriculture Director Chris Chinn said the $45 million the state put toward the facilities is one way it is investing in farmers.
Christopher Daubert, the college's vice chancellor and dean, said the facilities target challenges across soybeans, beef and wine — researchers can design and engineer new soybean varieties that withstand drought, flood and other stresses, and deliver that technology to Missouri growers. Anita Vanderwert of the Missouri Cattlemen's Association said producers face tighter margins and rising demands, with diesel for farm vehicles above $6 a gallon and weather swinging between droughts and floods.
"We can either react to this change or we can lead it, and Missouri should always lead," Vanderwert said. The openings came the same day Gov. Mike Kehoe signed an executive order easing diesel costs for farmers and truckers, concentrating the state's agricultural support actions on a single day.
