Mississippi Opens Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week as Reeves Warns of 'Second Tornado Season'

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · States · GSM News

PEARL, Miss. — Gov. Tate Reeves has proclaimed Oct. 12–17, 2026, as Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Mississippi, encouraging residents to prepare for the state's secondary severe weather season. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), which announced the proclamation on Oct. 11, is partnering with the National Weather Service to highlight a different preparedness topic each day.

While spring is typically Mississippi's most active tornado season, the state can experience significant severe weather from October through December. Mississippi recorded 80 tornadoes in 2025, including seven during the final three months of the year, according to MEMA. This week's schedule runs: Monday, Make a Plan; Tuesday, Severe Thunderstorms; Wednesday, Tornado Safety; Thursday, Flash Flooding; and Friday, Warning Reception Methods.

"Residents need to be prepared before severe weather strikes," Reeves said, urging Mississippians to review emergency plans and know where they will go for safety. MEMA Executive Director Stephen McCraney also advised residents to review insurance policies, assemble or update disaster supply kits and discuss emergency plans with their families, noting that knowing what to do before severe weather occurs can make all the difference.
