Montana Democratic Party Chair Resigns, Backs Independent Over Her Own Party's Senate Nominee

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · States · GSM News

HELENA, Mont. — Shannon O'Brien, chairwoman of the Montana Democratic Party since 2025, resigned on Monday, Oct. 12, and announced she will back independent candidate Seth Bodnar in the state's U.S. Senate race rather than her own party's nominee, Alani Bankhead. O'Brien made the announcement in an op-ed published on MS NOW.

O'Brien wrote that she could not back Bankhead because the nominee "does not have the momentum, resources or will to win this race," and criticized Bankhead for directing attacks at Bodnar instead of at Republican nominee Kurt Alme. She said the winner of the race will almost certainly vote on a Supreme Court nominee, making it impossible to stay quiet. Bankhead, who said in August she would not drop out, remains the Democratic candidate.

Decision Desk HQ projections give Republican Kurt Alme a 91 percent probability of winning the Senate race, and current polling shows Alme at 43.4 percent support against Bankhead's 18.3 percent. Montana votes in the Senate election on Nov. 3, and the chairwoman's resignation adds fresh turmoil to an already trailing Democratic campaign.
