Garden Grove: GKN to Host Oct. 27 Community Meeting on Claims Program as $125 Million Settlement Awaits Court Approval

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · California · GSM News

Garden Grove is a city in Orange County, California. The City of Garden Grove reports that GKN Aerospace has announced a community meeting on Oct. 27 to present its proposed claims program for residents and businesses affected by the May chemical incident, with opportunities to ask questions and receive help with applications. Updates and meeting details will be posted at gkngg.com.

Background: On May 21, an overheated tank holding roughly 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate at GKN's Garden Grove plant raised fears of an explosion, forcing more than 50,000 nearby residents to evacuate for several days. On Aug. 24, GKN announced a claims program of up to $100 million covering evacuation-related losses such as hotel stays, meals, transportation, lost wages and loss of use, with instructions to be made available in multiple languages. On Oct. 12, the Orange County District Attorney's Office announced a $125 million civil settlement framework with GKN: in addition to the $100 million claims program, it includes $8.47 million to reimburse emergency response and abatement costs, $15 million in civil penalties, a robust safety plan and a multi-year monitoring program. The stipulated judgment has been filed in Orange County Superior Court and must be approved by a judge before it becomes final. The DA's office previously closed its criminal investigation with no criminal charges.
