Oregon Sanctions Girls High School Flag Football, Becoming the 25th State

SALEM, Ore. — The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) voted on Oct. 12 to sanction girls high school flag football as an official sport, making Oregon the 25th state in the nation to do so — and the latest in what is now half of all U.S. states.

Flag football has grown quickly in Oregon: last season 57 varsity teams and more than 1,400 girls competed. After two years as an “emerging activity,” the sport will play its first official season this spring. The Seattle Seahawks have supported the sport's development in the state with equipment and a $30,000 donation, and Beaverton-based Nike has pledged home and away jerseys for teams competing in the inaugural season or adding a program in its first three years.

“The Seahawks are proud to support the growth of girls flag football across our region and help create more opportunities for young women to compete,” said Mario Bailey, the team's vice president of community engagement. Flag football will make its Olympic debut in 2028, and the NCAA has recommended it become a championship collegiate sport the same year.
