HARRISBURG, Pa. — Franklin County's coroner reported Pennsylvania's sixth measles-associated death of 2026 on Oct. 12: a 39-year-old woman with several underlying conditions, whom the coroner's office investigated on Oct. 10 and found met the state's definition of a measles-associated death. Her identity was not released. A coroner's office spokesperson told NBC News the woman was unvaccinated and the primary cause of death was listed as a “probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of the measles.” The state Department of Health said it is reviewing the death and will update the public when the review is complete, and the CDC expressed condolences and said it will continue supporting the state's response.

GSM previously reported that Pennsylvania's outbreak — the largest state-level measles outbreak in the U.S. in 30 years — stood at 943 cases with five deaths on Oct. 1, and at 1,078 cases on Oct. 8. State health department data updated Oct. 9 now put the 2026 total at 1,136 cases with 219 hospitalizations, the vast majority among unvaccinated people.

The five earlier deaths were two infants in Lancaster County, a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County, an 18-year-old in Mifflin County, and a 20-year-old woman immunocompromised by leukemia.
