6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Southern Panama After Friday's Powerful Tremors

Tuesday, October 13, 2026 · World News · GSM News

A preliminary magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Panama on Monday evening, October 12, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage, the Associated Press reported.

The earthquake struck at around 6:20 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), about 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of Rio Grande in the country's southern region.

The latest tremor came after two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.7 and 6.6, along with a series of aftershocks, shook southern Panama on Friday afternoon, October 9. The earlier earthquakes caused buildings near the epicentre to collapse and prompted evacuations across the country, and authorities have declared a state of emergency as aftershocks continue to rattle communities.
