LIMA, Oct. 12 — Peru has been named "South America's Leading Destination" for the fourth consecutive year (2023-26) in the regional edition of the 2026 World Travel Awards, winning six categories in total, according to a release issued Monday by PROMPERU, the country's commission for the promotion of exports and tourism, via GlobeNewswire.

The six awards are: South America's Leading Destination; South America's Leading Nature Destination, won for the first time; South America's Leading Contributor to Sustainable Tourism, won for the second time; South America's Leading Cultural Destination, won for the eleventh time; South America's Leading Culinary Destination, won for the thirteenth time; and South America's Leading Tourist Attraction, awarded for the ninth time to the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu in the Cusco region.

PROMPERU said the six awards highlight the value of Peru's natural, cultural and gastronomic diversity and consolidate the country's position as a cultural and culinary reference at the regional level, while the sustainable-tourism award underscores its efforts to promote responsible tourism while preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

The World Travel Awards is a globally recognized brand with regional editions spanning Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean and Central America, Europe, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, North America and South America. PROMPERU is a specialized technical agency attached to Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and has promoted the country's tourism, exports and image internationally since 2009. Machupicchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, remains one of the continent's most iconic attractions.
