New York — U.S. stocks ended little changed on Tuesday, October 13. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 180.45 points, or 0.35 percent, to 51,670.10. The S&P 500 slipped 1.79 points, or 0.02 percent, to 7,805.45, remaining near record levels, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 41.52 points, or 0.15 percent, to 27,204.38. The Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks declined 0.39 percent to 2,783.56.

Johnson & Johnson fell about 6 percent after its MedTech division missed sales estimates, even though the company's overall profit beat expectations. Caterpillar lost more than 3 percent. Shares of the big banks all closed lower after their earnings reports, with Citigroup down about 5.5 percent, the steepest decline among them; Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo also fell.

Semiconductor stocks remained under pressure. Memory-chip shares fell for a second straight day after China's CXMT said over the weekend that it had achieved a breakthrough in memory-chip production, stoking concerns about Chinese competition. Micron Technology fell 3.6 percent, and Applied Materials dropped more than 6.5 percent, the largest decline in both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100.

Investors next await the September consumer price index, scheduled for release on Wednesday. (Sources: Investor's Business Daily, Investopedia and The Motley Fool closing reports, October 13, 2026)
