Republican Governors Group Spends $427,000 in Five Days as Vermont Governor's Race Heats Up

MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Republican Governors Association is spending heavily to defend Gov. Phil Scott. According to Vermont Political Observer (Oct. 12), the RGA's in-state vehicle, A Stronger Vermont, reported $427,388.90 in spending within five days — a newly reported $252,826.90 on top of roughly $174,562 reported days earlier — supporting Scott and attacking his Democratic challenger, Amanda Janoo.
The group has also set aside another $400,000 for future use, bringing the RGA's total Vermont commitment to about $800,000 — more than it spent in the state in any year since 2018. For the nation's second-least-populous state, that level of outside money is unusual.
Scott, in office since 2017, is perennially among the nation's most popular governors, but his race in deep-blue Vermont is not comfortable: a State Navigate poll released Oct. 7 showed Scott leading Janoo by just 46% to 43%. Commentators note that the RGA's decision to spend this much in such a small state itself signals the group sees real risk in the race.
Democrats criticize the outside spending as an attempt to sway a Vermont election; Scott's campaign emphasizes his cross-party appeal. This report states the campaign-finance and polling facts without taking a political position.
