Heat Dome Pushes Milwaukee to a Record 87 Degrees on Oct. 12

MILWAUKEE — Under a “heat dome,” Milwaukee broke its daily high temperature record on Oct. 12. The National Weather Service confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the temperature at Mitchell International Airport reached 87°F (about 30.6°C) at around 3 p.m., surpassing the previous record of 83°F set in 1995.
NWS meteorologist Mark Gehring said a heat dome over southeastern Wisconsin, southerly winds and persistent sunshine combined to produce the abnormal heat, and that breaking the record was “pretty much a slam dunk.” October is normally one of Milwaukee's most comfortable months: the normal October average is 57°F, but this October has averaged 61°F so far; Madison is similar, averaging 59°F against a normal 54°F.
On precipitation, Milwaukee's normal October rainfall is 1.05 inches — all of which fell on Oct. 1 alone this year — and the Weather Service expects more rain on Oct. 15.
