Evers Blasts Trump Administration for Denying Disaster Aid to Northern Wisconsin Communities

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers on October 13 blasted the Trump administration for denying federal disaster assistance to several northern Wisconsin communities hit by severe storms, flooding and tornadoes on the night of June 20 and morning of June 21, 2026. The administration denied Evers' request for a Major Disaster Declaration — submitted in August and left unanswered for nearly two months — determining that "supplemental federal assistance under the Stafford Act is not warranted." The denial leaves Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Iron, Price, Sawyer and Washburn counties without federal help for more than $6.5 million in damages.
Speaking on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Wisconsin Today" on October 12, Evers called the denial political: "This is all political... I'm pissed, because this is going to impact those counties on the list. It's going to have to be paid one way or another, and the bottom line is it'll be the local property taxpayers that will be paying for this." He noted the affected counties are ones Trump won: "A good president would help the people that voted for him, if nothing else — but he would help all people." Evers said the state has urged FEMA to reconsider, and that a second request, covering August flooding in the Milwaukee area, remains pending. He also rejected Trump's suggestions of intervening in the 2026 midterm elections: "We will fight back in the courts, we will fight back on the streets, we will fight back at the ballot box."
