Morrisey Proposes $19.7 Million State Parks Package, Including $1 Million More for Canaan Valley Snowmaking

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey has proposed a $19.7 million investment package for West Virginia's state parks, including an additional $1 million to upgrade the snowmaking system at the state-owned Canaan Valley Resort State Park ski area.
According to the governor's office, the funding combines $9.7 million from the state surplus with $10 million through the state parks endowment-fund program. Beyond the Canaan Valley snowmaking upgrade, the package covers wastewater improvements at Cacapon Resort and Chief Logan state parks and renovation of the tram station building at Hawks Nest State Park, among other projects.
The state parks endowment fund board is scheduled to meet in Charleston on Oct. 20 to consider the proposal, so the projects remain at the proposal stage pending board and subsequent approvals. Canaan Valley, in Tucker County, is one of West Virginia's premier ski destinations, and snowmaking capacity directly affects the length of its season and the surrounding tourism economy.
The Morrisey administration has cast the state park system as a pillar of West Virginia's outdoor-recreation economy, and the proposed funding would address a backlog of facility upgrades across several parks.
