Argentina Asks Law of the Sea Tribunal to Halt Sea Lion Oil Project North of Falklands

UN News and other outlets reported on October 13-14 that Argentina has asked the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg to halt the Sea Lion offshore oil project north of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), arguing that the United Kingdom authorised it illegally. Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno set out his government's position. The Sea Lion field lies about 130 miles north of the islands, holds an estimated 1.7 billion barrels, and is being developed by the UK's Rockhopper and Israel's Navitas, with production expected in 2028. UK ministers called Argentina's move economic coercion and said they would resist it.
