Brazil's Flavio Bolsonaro Reverses Course, Backs Ending Six-Day Workweek

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Reuters reported that Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro said on Tuesday, October 13, that he would vote in favour of a labour reform cutting the workweek from 44 to 40 hours, effectively ending the six-day workweek common in sectors such as retail, reversing the long-standing opposition of him and his Liberal Party. The constitutional amendment passed the lower house in May, and the Senate was expected to vote on October 14. A Quaest poll in July found nearly 70 percent of Brazilians support the change. Bolsonaro, who led the first round with 47 percent of the vote, faces President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the October 25 runoff. Lula said on Tuesday that, following public pressure and street protests, the Liberal Party had decided to vote in favour.
