Argentina Inflation Picks Up to 1.9% in September as Core Rate Eases

Argentina's national statistics institute (INDEC) reported on October 13 that consumer prices rose 1.9% month over month in September, up from 1.7% in August and in line with market estimates. Inflation accumulated 23.6% in the first nine months of the year, with the 12-month rate at 33.4%.
By category, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels recorded the largest increase at 3.1%, followed by education at 3.0%. Food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 2.0% and made the largest contribution to monthly inflation in most regions, except Greater Buenos Aires, where housing and utilities had the greatest impact. Seasonal prices increased 2.9%, led by vegetables, tubers and legumes, while regulated prices rose 2.3%, reflecting higher gas, electricity and private healthcare costs. Restaurants and hotels posted the smallest increase at 1.1%, and clothing and footwear rose 1.4%. Services prices rose 2.4%, against 1.7% for goods.
Core inflation, which strips out volatile items, eased to 1.7% month over month (31.6% year over year) from 1.8% in August. Analysts noted the September uptick was driven mainly by tariffs, rents and seasonal food prices rather than broad underlying price pressure.
