Brazil Could Become World's Largest Food Exporter by Year-End, Vice President Says

Brazilian Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin said on October 13 that Brazil could become the world's largest food exporter by the end of 2026, potentially overtaking the United States. He made the remarks at an event hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in Brasília, marking the opening of 700 new international markets for Brazilian agribusiness products since 2023.
Alckmin noted that Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world by land area but was importing food 60 years ago. He credited the country's animal and plant health standards, alongside diplomatic engagement, for helping Brazilian agricultural products enter new markets. The 700 market openings refer to authorisations for specific products in specific overseas destinations, rather than 700 new countries; the latest milestone was marked by permission for Brazilian fish exports to the United Arab Emirates.
Brazil is a major global exporter of soybeans, coffee, cotton, orange juice and meat, and China is one of the principal buyers of its agricultural produce. Alckmin also said Brazil needs to diversify its export destinations, lower costs and reduce bureaucracy, and raise the share of processed, higher-value products in its export basket to improve competitiveness.
