A man posing as a customer snatched a gold chain worth about HK$70,000 from a Chow Sang Sang jewellery store at 70 Kwong Fuk Road in Tai Po, Hong Kong, at around 3 p.m. on October 14. The man, aged about 40, asked to try on the chain, which weighed more than one tael, then grabbed it and fled on foot toward Kwong Fuk Lane. Police have classified the case as theft. The Tai Po District Criminal Investigation Team is following up, and the suspect remained at large, with no arrests made so far.
According to reports, the man entered the store in the afternoon saying he wanted to buy a gold chain. A staff member produced a chain for him to try on; once he had it on, he suddenly seized the chain and ran out of the store toward Kwong Fuk Lane. Police received the report at 3:11 p.m., and officers reviewed CCTV footage from the store and nearby streets to trace the suspect. China News Service reported that police initially suspected the man had then boarded an airport-bound bus to escape. The investigation is continuing.
Based on details released by police and local media, the suspect is about 40 years old with short hair, and was wearing a black top and long trousers. No further details, such as his height or build, have been released. Police appealed to witnesses to provide information and reminded jewellery shops and other merchants to watch out for suspicious persons.
The store's loss was the single gold chain, weighing more than one tael and valued at about HK$70,000. No injuries were reported in the incident. Chow Sang Sang said on the evening of October 14 that the matter had been handed over to police and that it had no further information at this stage. The branch is located on Kwong Fuk Road near Kwong Fuk Lane in the Tai Po town centre, a busy shopping area.
