Fake "Douyin Customer Service" Scam Strikes Again in Macao: Four More Residents Lose Over MOP 940,000 Combined

Macao broadcaster TDM reported on October 13 that the fake "Douyin customer service"phone scam has claimed more victims in Macao, with four more residents falling prey and losing more than MOP 940,000 in total.

The Judiciary Police had previously issued an alert on this type of fraud. According to the police, scammers posing as customer service agents call victims claiming that a "live-streaming membership" service they supposedly subscribed to is about to expire and will be renewed automatically. Using the pretext of helping to cancel the subscription, the callers ask victims to switch to a messaging app, induce them to enable the "screen sharing" function and disclose bank and credit card details, and then steal their money.

The Judiciary Police said fake customer-service phone scams remain rampant and have caused losses to many people; the Macao police had also recently received reports from a number of Macao residents who had received such fraudulent calls.

The same scam has repeatedly caused heavy losses in Macao recently. Earlier this month, 25 Macao residents fell victim to the fake "Douyin customer service" scam, losing more than MOP 5.4 million in total.

The Judiciary Police reminded residents not to trust a caller's claimed customer-service identity based solely on a phone call or text message, and to verify through the official channels of the institution or platform concerned. Residents were also urged not to transfer money on any "customer service" instructions, not to enable screen sharing, and not to disclose bank or credit card information, in order to avoid financial losses.
