South Africa's Deputy Police Chief Quits as Disciplinary Hearing Begins; Exit Treated as Dishonourable Discharge

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · World News · GSM News

西比亚自2025年9月起被停职。他是近几个月来在马德兰加委员会揭露的问题后辞职或被解职的多名南非高级警官之一。Suspended deputy national police commissioner Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Sowetan reported on October 12. Sibiya's resignation took effect on Monday after his legal representative tendered it shortly after his disciplinary hearing began, SAPS spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed.

SAPS said his departure is considered a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings were pending against him at the time of his resignation, and confirmed his employment had been terminated with immediate effect.

Sibiya was facing seven disciplinary charges, including allegations relating to his interactions with controversial businessman Vusimusi "Cat" Matlala, the handling of confidential police information and alleged interference in police investigations. The allegations have formed part of wider scrutiny at the Madlanga commission of inquiry into possible criminal infiltration and undue influence within the criminal justice system.

Sibiya remains in custody facing criminal charges before the Randburg magistrate's court, including rape, human trafficking and the sexual grooming of a minor, which he denies. His bail application is continuing. Sibiya, the deputy national commissioner for crime detection, had been on suspension since September 2025, and is one of several senior police officers to have resigned or been dismissed in recent months following revelations at the Madlanga commission.
