Taiwan Foreign Minister Warns Europe in Warsaw: Dependence on China Is a Threat to Freedom and Sovereignty, Not Just an Economic Risk

Addressing the Warsaw Security Forum, Lin said China's authoritarian ideology is incompatible with European democracy, and that dependence on China is not merely an economic risk but a threat to Europe's freedom and sovereignty. He added that Taiwan and Europe share the core values of democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law, and argued that expanding trade with Taiwan would also benefit Europe.
The EU summit opening on October 15 is also set to discuss policy toward China. The bloc is seeking to narrow its trade deficit with China and reduce its dependence on China in key sectors.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Taiwan has been working to strengthen its ties with Europe. Poland does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and Lin has visited Europe several times since becoming foreign minister. Beijing has repeatedly condemned overseas visits by Taiwan officials.
