Georgia Measles Cases Reach 22 After Unvaccinated Macon County Resident Tests Positive

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · States · GSM News

FOX 5 Atlanta reported on October 14 that Georgia health officials confirmed a new measles case in an unvaccinated Macon County resident, bringing the state's total to 22 cases this year, more than double the 10 cases reported in all of 2025. The infected person is isolating at home, and unvaccinated close contacts are quarantining.

The Georgia Department of Public Health said the person has no history of travel but was exposed to a confirmed case connected to an ongoing outbreak in Pennsylvania, and that it is tracking people who may have been exposed; it has not released the specific locations of potential community exposures in Georgia. Pennsylvania's measles outbreak has surpassed 1,100 cases this year.

State epidemiologist Dr. Cherie Drenzek said one dose of the MMR vaccine offers roughly 93% protection against measles and two doses about 97%. Measles spreads through the air and can remain infectious for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room; symptoms typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure, and can take up to 21 days.
