Leader of NCAA Point-Shaving Scheme Jalen Smith Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 13 — Jalen Smith, 30, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced on Tuesday to 72 months in prison, three years of supervised release, restitution of approximately $1.1 million and forfeiture of $75,000 for his role leading a bribery and point-shaving scheme to fix NCAA Division I men's basketball games, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced.
Smith was charged by indictment in January in connection with the scheme and was later charged with possession of a firearm by a felon after a 2025 search of his Charlotte residence recovered a loaded semi-automatic pistol. In March, he pleaded guilty to bribery in sporting contests, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud and felon-in-possession counts. U.S. District Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro imposed the sentence.
"Jalen Smith played a central role in this point-shaving scheme, which corrupted the integrity of NCAA games and the sport of basketball itself," U.S. Attorney David Metcalf said in the announcement.
