LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 — Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, 82, announced on Tuesday that she has become a U.S. citizen, more than six decades after she first started the process, Just Jared reported. "A journey that began 62 years ago," Mitchell wrote on Instagram, posting a photo of herself smiling and waving a small American flag along with a short video of her name being called as her citizenship became official.

Mitchell was born in Canada and first traveled to the United States in 1965 with her former husband Chuck Mitchell, living in Detroit for several years. After a brief period in New York City, she moved to Southern California in the late 1960s, where she still lives today. She told the Ottawa Observer in 2006 that Los Angeles was her "workplace" while British Columbia was her "heartbeat."

Earlier this year, Mitchell returned to Canada for the first time in many years to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Juno Awards in March, and a moment of hers at this year's Grammy Awards went viral.
