The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on October 13 that the International Monetary Fund, in its October World Economic Outlook, projected Japan's nominal gross domestic product at about $4.4676 trillion in 2027, leaving Japan sixth in the world for the first time since 1968 after being overtaken by India, at about $4.5211 trillion in fourth place, and the United Kingdom, at about $4.4889 trillion in fifth.

The IMF had forecast in April that India and the UK would pass Japan in 2029, and has now moved that timeline forward by two years. Japan's nominal GDP this year is about $4.3419 trillion, still ahead of India's roughly $4.0602 trillion, but the gap is narrowing quickly.

The IMF forecasts growth this year of 7% for India, 1.3% for the UK and 0.7% for Japan. Japan's nominal GDP ranking rose to second in the world in 1968, was passed by China in 2010, and slipped to fourth after Germany overtook it in 2024.
