Massachusetts Governor Demands Utilities Return $1.5 Billion Owed to Customers

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · States · GSM News

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey on Oct. 13 demanded that the state's electric transmission companies immediately return $1.5 billion owed to customers and provide a clear timeline for the refunds.

The governor's office said the money involves charges previously over-collected from customers, and Healey has written to the companies requiring them to begin the refund process without delay.

Energy prices and utility bills have been a prominent household concern in Massachusetts in recent years, and state government and the Department of Public Utilities oversee the rates and billing practices of electric and gas companies.

The governor's office said it will track each company's refund progress and publish refund arrangements and timelines as they are set.
