California Assembly Staffer Ho Yin Mo Released on Bond Oct. 2 After 15 Days in ICE Custody

SAN FRANCISCO — Ho Yin Mo, a Hong Kong-born district representative for California Assemblymember Catherine Stefani, was released on bond by an immigration judge on October 2 after 15 days in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody; his removal proceedings are not over. Mo, 28, previously worked as a reporter for Bay Area Chinese-language station KTSF. He was detained by ICE on September 17 at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and held at a detention center in Pahrump, Nevada.
ICE says Mo entered the United States lawfully in January 2020 and overstayed a departure deadline of May 15, 2020. His attorney says Mo filed for asylum in 2023, that the application is pending, and that he holds a valid work permit; friends say he is covered by Hong Kong DED, a claim authorities have not confirmed. While he was detained, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and 11 members of the Board of Supervisors publicly called for his release.
