Michigan Awards $65 Million for Public Transit Projects, Creates New Coordination Role

Wednesday, October 14, 2026 · States · GSM News

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Oct. 13 that $65 million in grants through the state's Intercity Public Access Fund (IPAF) will support public transportation projects across the state.

The governor's office said the funding will go toward vehicles, facilities and service improvements for local transit systems, covering transit agencies in urban and rural communities alike. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is also creating a new transit and rail coordination position to align planning for bus and rail projects statewide.

Michigan's public transit network is operated by local agencies, with the state providing capital and operating support through dedicated funds, including for systems in the Detroit metropolitan area and counties across the state.

MDOT said the list of funded projects and amounts will be published through the fund's process, with disbursements to follow during the fiscal year.
