Nebraska Highlights 'Good Life is Calling Veterans' Initiative; Over 85,000 Service Members Contacted

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen on Oct. 13 joined leaders from several state agencies and post-secondary institutions in Lincoln to highlight the "Good Life is Calling Veterans" initiative, which aims to bring discharging U.S. Armed Forces service members and their families to Nebraska, according to a release from the governor's office.

The initiative is run by the Nebraska Commission on Military and Veteran Affairs (CMVA) in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs, the Department of Economic Development, the Department of Labor, the Department of Education, the Nebraska Military Department, and post-secondary institutions holding the state's "Veteran & Active Duty Supportive" designation. The initial phase involves a series of emails to service members who recently discharged or will soon discharge, encouraging them to put down roots in Nebraska and connecting them with jobs; since the campaign launched in July 2026, more than 85,000 service members have been contacted with information on Nebraska veteran benefits, quality of life, low cost of living, and educational opportunities.

When a service member requests more information, their contact details are routed to the relevant agency so a team member can respond personally: veterans' affairs staff answer questions on benefits, economic development staff cover housing and quality of life, labor staff share job opportunities, National Guard recruiters discuss continued service options including tuition assistance, student loan repayment, enlistment bonuses, and tax benefits, and participating schools describe their veteran and military programs.

The initiative also includes "Operation Good Life" virtual career fairs for recently or soon-to-be separated service members and their spouses; the first is set for mid-December in partnership with the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, allowing participants — including those serving overseas — to connect online with hundreds of Nebraska employers. Funding comes from the Veterans Employment Program Fund, supported through sales of the "Support Our Troops" license plate, the release said.
