Trump Says Taiwan Agreed to Buy 30% of Alaska Pipeline Project's Gas; Taipei Has Not Publicly Responded

President Donald Trump said at a rally in Alaska on October 13 that Taiwan has agreed to buy 30 percent of the natural gas from the Alaska pipeline project, according to Reuters. Reuters reported that Trump made the claim at the rally, but that the terms of the agreement remain unclear. As of publication, Taiwan has not publicly responded to the "30 percent" figure.
The project in question is the proposed Alaska LNG project, which would build a pipeline of roughly 800 miles (about 1,287 kilometers) to carry natural gas from Alaska's North Slope to Nikiski, where it would be liquefied and exported to markets in Asia.
Taiwan and the project have an existing record of cooperation. In 2025, Taiwan's CPC Corporation signed an agreement with the Alaska Gasline Development Corp to buy liquefied natural gas from the project and to invest in it. Taiwan's leader Lai Ching-te said at the time that the purchases and investment could help ensure Taiwan's energy security.
Trump's October 13 remarks put a specific figure — 30 percent of the project's output — on the purchases, but Reuters noted that the terms of the agreement are unclear, and Taipei has not yet publicly addressed the figure. How the terms are implemented, and how Taiwan responds, remains to be seen. (Reporting by Reuters)
