Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger announced Oct. 13 that M.C. Dean, a power and technology engineering firm, proposes to invest $412.5 million to expand its Modular Mission Critical manufacturing campus in Caroline County, creating an expected 1,950 new jobs.

The company plans two new facilities: a 442,000-square-foot building on its existing main campus and a 1.5 million-square-foot building on its 600-acre north campus. When complete, the campus will cover 1,300 acres with more than 3.6 million square feet by 2030, making it the largest modular manufacturing campus in the United States. The expansion must go through the special exception permit process, including two public hearings.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Caroline County and other partners on the project, and the General Assembly's Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission allocated up to $45 million in support, pending approval by the state legislature. The company also plans a Power Systems Training Center at Caroline High School starting in 2027.

Spanberger called the announcement a transformational next chapter for the company, the county and the Commonwealth. Tysons-based M.C. Dean was founded in 1949 and employs more than 9,000 people across more than 40 offices worldwide.
