Argentina's Milei in Washington, Backs Trump Ahead of US Midterms

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · World News · GSM News

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina's President Javier Milei flew into Washington on October 14 for meetings with investors and the Hispanic Heritage Gala, and is due to address the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, AFP reported. Milei voiced support ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, saying conservatives 'cannot give an inch in our reconquest of the hemisphere,' according to AFP.

President Donald Trump has firmly backed Milei, calling him his 'favourite president' a year ago when Argentina faced crucial legislative elections. Analysts have argued that backing, together with a currency swap agreement with the U.S. Treasury, helped Milei succeed in those polls. The package, announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, centred on a US$20 billion swap with Argentina's central bank, in which the U.S. exchanged dollars for pesos, and came shortly after Milei's party lost a key provincial election.

Trump made clear at the time that the support hinged on a Milei victory, remarks that unsettled Argentine markets, with the main stock index giving up earlier gains and falling about 2 percent, the Associated Press reported. Milei's Washington itinerary includes investor meetings and the Chamber of Commerce address.
