Austria Extends Temporary Border Checks With Four Neighbours to March 2027

VIENNA — Austria's temporary border checks with Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia will run until March 15, 2027, according to a compilation of European Commission official notifications. Austria is among five countries — with Spain, France, Italy and Germany — maintaining or extending temporary internal Schengen border checks in October.
The compilation shows each country's arrangements differ: Germany's checks on land borders with nine neighbours run until March 15, 2027; France's checks on land, air and sea borders with Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland run until October 31; Spain applied checks from October 8 to 22 on air and sea connections with Italy; and Italy applied checks from October 1 to 16 on air and sea connections with Spain.
The temporary controls are not a Europe-wide border closure. They are document-inspection arrangements introduced by individual countries over concerns including migration, organised crime and geopolitical tensions. The Schengen area remains open, though travellers on certain cross-border routes may face additional document inspections.
