Canada Races to Seal India Trade Pact by Year-End, Deepen EU Ties

OTTAWA — Canada is racing to seal a trade pact with India by the end of the year and deepen ties with the European Union as it seeks to reduce reliance on the United States, Foreign Minister Anita Anand told Reuters on October 14 in an interview at the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi.
Anand said the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with India is part of Canada's trade diversification strategy and that Ottawa aims to conclude it by the end of the year, adding that Canada has a goal of doubling non-U.S. trade over the next 10 years. She said negotiations were progressing well, that Indian trade negotiators visited Canada last week, and that Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu was in India with a business delegation. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have discussed the agreement, and Modi is expected to visit Canada in December, she said.
Canada and the EU are expected to discuss cooperation on critical minerals, energy and super intelligence at a summit later this month, building on trade ties under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), Anand said. Canada has concluded 15 trade agreements covering 51 countries and 1.5 billion consumers, signed a free trade agreement with Indonesia last year, and is looking to sign a pact with ASEAN in 2026, she said.
