OCEANSIDE — Oceanside is a city in San Diego County, California. The City of Oceanside has been awarded $3 million in state funding for interim tiny homes. According to an October 6 press release from state Sen. Catherine Blakespear's office and October 13 reporting by the North County Daily Star and NC Pipeline, Blakespear presented the city with a $3 million check on October 6. The money comes from the 2026-27 state budget and is intended for interim housing units and support services for the people using them.

The project is expected to be located at the Oceanside Navigation Center and aims to provide 17 tiny homes to help individuals transition out of homelessness. At the presentation, Blakespear said other cities have shown that building small individual shelters at scale can dramatically reduce the number of people living unsheltered. Deputy Mayor Eric Joyce and other city officials attended, along with leaders of partner organizations DignityMoves and Interfaith Community Services.

The Point-in-Time Count showed 362 homeless people in Oceanside and 9,803 across San Diego County, the reports said. City officials said Oceanside has no formal tiny homes policy or project pipeline yet; the city must identify which state department will oversee the spending and what process applies before the City Council takes a formal vote to accept the funds. Housing and Neighborhood Services Director Lelani Hines said the city aims to build the homes quickly and efficiently, in part to counter the impacts of El Niño storms.
